EC cuts roaming charges for mobile phone users The European Commission (EC) has laid out new mobile phone roaming rates, in its effort to make rates abroad the same as home by 2015.
Mobile phone companies will not be able to charge users more than 32p per minute for making a phone call, and there will be a cap of 10p per minute for receiving calls while in the European Union (EU).It will also put a top limit of 45p per megabyte and £45 on downloads – while receiving and listening to a voicemail while abroad in the EU will be free.”This has not come a moment too soon,” said Ernest Doku, Technology Expert at uSwitch.”With more than ten million smartphones now in circulation in the UK, this will be welcome news to gadget lovers.”Mr Doku added that mobile phone users should shop around for the best roaming deals on different networks.”This will inject much needed competition into the market and minimise bill shocks for mobile users in the future.”He added that holidaymakers should contact their network provider before travelling to make sure they are aware of the costs of using their mobile phone abroad.
