Afraid of losing your home? New options for those facing foreclosure

0

Free meetings on Saturday and Monday will outline options for struggling South Florida owners afraid of losing their homes.

“It’s still an ongoing issue: There are neighborhoods and neighborhoods filled with foreclosed homes,” said Brad Dwin, spokesman for the nonprofit HOPE NOW. The group was created  by lenders, investors, counselors and others to help people having trouble making their payments.

Dwin expects about 1,000 to fill a Monday meeting at the Westin Diplomat Resort, 3555 S. Ocean Dr., in Hollywood. From 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. owners will be able to meet with their mortgage holder and a federally approved counseling agency to try to find a way for them to stay in their homes.

Some may have new options: The Obama Administration announced Thursday a new program that will give unemployed homeowners with FHA loans a break on part or all of their mortgage payments for up to 12 months. It had been only up to four months.

Those mortgage companies participating in the Making Home Affordable Program will also be required to give the year-long reprieve “whenever possible,” according to a U.S. Housing and Urban Development statement.

Monday’s day-long community event is sponsored by the federal home affordable program that  was started to help struggling homeowners.

Those attending the event may also be able to get relief from a $1 billion Florida Hardest Hit program administered by the state and paid for by the feds, said U.S. Treasury spokeswoman Andrea Risotto.

People don’t need to register to attend. Anyone showing up before 7:30 p.m. will be able to speak to their lender. They should bring their monthly mortgage statements, the two most recent pay stubs and other financial information detailed on makinghomeaffordable.gov.

On Saturday, another group will hold meetings to help struggling homeowners.

The Sarasota-based nonprofit Neighborhood Community Foundation will provide two free foreclosure-prevention workshops in Miami and Fort Lauderdale.

The first will be 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Hilton Miami Airport, 5101 Blue Lagoon Dr. The other is from 3 to 5 p.m, at the Homewood Suites Conference Room, 2061 Griffin Rd.

Attorney David Candler Hicks said he will talk about strategies to avoid foreclosure and scams that prey on desperate homeowners.

To attend, people must register at Neighborhood-Community.org or call 877-306-5299.
